ISTE Standard 1: Facilitate and inspire student learning and creativity.
Overview
"Teachers use their knowledge of subject matter, teaching and learning, and technology to facilitate experiences that advance student learning, creativity, and innovation in both face-to-face and virtual environments."
a. Promote, support, and model creative and innovative thinking and inventivenessFor me, technology and creativity should be considered inseparable in the classroom. I often use the SAMR model as a reference for technology integration in my classroom, and I when I'm considering integrating on the Modification/Redefinition level, I often consider activities or integration that allows kids to be creative in ways they aren't able to without technology. The Night Zookeeper excerpt in the first artifact below below is an example of a student using prompts shared by other students in other countries that allowed them to draw an imaginary animal and create a story about them. The second artifact is a student's poetry portfolio created in Google Slides, which allowed her to write, illustrate, and receive feedback from students as she wrote.

b. Engage students in exploring real-world issues and solving authentic problems using digital tools and resourcesIn my experience, when students perceive authenticity and relevance in their assignments and assessments, they will naturally be driven to do their best. My Great American Road Trip lesson allowed students to work with Google Maps and other Internet sites to plan a road trip and assessed their understanding of regions, directions, and map reading. My students also create a Smithsonian Museum exhibit proposal, where they research and create a museum exhibit about an animal, and then create an artificial adaptation for an animal whose habitat is threatened or destroyed. The Smithsonian artifact is a work-in-progress, but clearly shows evidence of real-world application of knowledge.
